Further Along

Having a small crew means our exterior update is taking some time.  This is post shows where the progress was on October 23rd.  Almost all of the siding was up and mostly finishing remained.  One part of the process was lifting the electrical hook-up off the wall, mounting a box, then putting it back in place.  That's the type of thing that is often not thought of when a project like this is being considered.  But it had to be done -- and could only be done by a pro. Nothing fancy is being done with exterior fixtures because there just is no room in the budget for complex wiring.  That will probably happen next year.

We think the curb appeal for the old exterior was pretty good, but the new design is even better.  The front is about 3/4 of the way done.  The gray coil needs to be installed around the windows, the porch needs to be finished.  The cedar will be stained to match the material in the gable.  Railings will be built.  We love the contrast between the blue of the siding and the gold of the shingle look.  A galvanized aluminum farm-style light will be used for the porch. There has been no decision as far as the mailbox goes.

The small Japanese maple has been successfully transplanted to the new bed, which is being built using the block from the previous bed.  Unilock pavers will make up the walkway.  Boulders left from the old beds will be used along side the driveway.  A new cedar gate will be built.
We think the cedar on the bump out looks amazing.  It will be even nicer in the warm weather when there is patio furniture in front of it.  When electrical is done next year, a couple of lights will probably be put out here.

This has been a very expensive project and we went over budget.  A lot of what was done isn't visible on the outside, but it's already obvious that the added insulation is helping inside.

The house probably won't be ready to handle Halloween, but it will get a chance to dress up a bit for Christmas.

No other house in the neighborhood looks like this, so it will be nice to stand out -- in a good way!

    1. We had to slightly deviate from the architect's vision, but sometimes you have to make concessions for what you can afford! Can't wait for the door to arrive (hopefully) next week.

    1. We are so against the whole washed-out farmhouse look, beige, gray, white. Yeck! We had a custom built barn style gate which I can't wait to post about once the facade is finished. We've got the bluest house on the block!

  3. It's a color combination I don't think I've ever seen before, but it looks great! You will really be appreciating that insulation in the dead of winter.

    1. We had a horrific wind storm the past two days -- 50mph off the lake. In the past, that would have kept me up all night. Also, the thermostat is actually comfortable set at 64 degrees. I think we will see lower heating bills for sure.

The first plan proposed to us had the colors reversed. The siding would be a gray/teal and the accent navy blue. TBG was adamant he still had to have a blue house, so we reversed it. I had first thought to go with a cedar that was more red, but the supply company suggested the lighter tone and I changed my mind. So glad you like!

    1. You know you're an adult when you are actually excited that a project gives you better insulation. It's still early in the season, but we have seen an improvement already!

    1. I was afraid having such a strong color would make it look a bit outrageous. Thank you!
