Deep Freeze

It was time to buy a chest freezer for the Microcosm.  The freezer compartment of the fridge was over-full and The Big Guy was afraid we'd kill it.  Raw feeding for the dog means buying extra meat and freezing most of it until it's time to thaw and serve.   The new cancer diet means preparing more food in advance as well.

We perused local options for buying the new appliance, but nothing fit our needs.  The five cubic foot chest was found on-line at Walmart.  It was $159 and on sale.  Best of all, we were able to use reward points at checkout to pay for it.  Free two day shipping actually took four days, mostly because of the huge wind event affecting most of the country, shutting down airports and delaying all sorts of things.  The box was a bit beat up, but the piece itself was fine.

The main compartment will be used for meat.  We like to take it out of the supermarket tray and wrap in wax paper or a plastic bag, then put into a freezer zippy.  We portion out for a day and a half, so we can pull out a bag a day in advance.  In order to keep using it up according to date, the stock is rotated whenever anything new goes in and either a slip is put in the bag to indicate the date of purchase, or that portion of the package label is cut out and saved.  There is a shelf under the side basket, where salmon/pumpkin meals and puppy slurry/stock is stored.

Veggie slop goes in the basket. If there isn't enough room it can go in the main compartment.

This freezer is saving us a lot of space in the main fridge where we store our food.  The refrigerator is probably the most important appliance in the house -- it runs every day and safe food storage depends on it.  We are a lot less nervous now that we are not overworking it.  This chest will be a great addition to our appliance family.

  1. Congrats on your new freezer - I couldn't live without mine. It nearly killed me to have to empty it to clean it and defrost it. It's so funny what makes us happy as adults - new appliances, clean spaces, decluttering lol

    1. Thanks! Remember the days when it was an insult to give your wife an appliance for a gift? This was like a mini-Christmas for me. I've wanted one for a while and now am so $(*@ing happy that I have one!

  2. I had to give up my under the counter freezer when I was re-doing the kitchen. I miss it so much. The original plan was to get a new fridge with a larger freezer section but then I decided to keep the old one (2004 model) since it was still working and was in good condition.

    1. I wish I could have fit this in the kitchen. But at least I am in the basement daily doing laundry -- or TBG is down there exercising. We have to go down to get more meat every time we need it. If the day ever comes and we get to renovate the kitchen, I really do want to work an extra freezer in as well.
