The previous living room rug was a cheap thing purchased for making the living room at the old house look more attractive when we put it up for sale. When it started to deteriorate, it was removed without a replacement put in place. A replacement was finally found last week.
The hand weights on the left side of the rug were there to hold the end flat -- a necessity because the thing was rolled up. This is not an expensive piece, and it came from Wayfair. The down-side to buying on-line was not really being able to adequately judge just how big it would be. Luckily, it fits! The rug previously situated in the space wasn't too big, so it shifted a lot. We wanted one that could be anchored by the sofa. This is a 7.5 by 10.5 square.
It took a while to find a style that would match the colors in the room, but not be so dark that it made the place look like a brown hole. Another bonus is that the multi-color shades will more easily hide spills -- we eat dinner and many of our lunches on the coffee table! This should also do a good job of hiding dog hair and messy paws.
The design was chosen because of its mid-century vibe. That is the feeling I pick up from the tables and the chair. The lamps influenced the color choice more than anything else.
Finding an acceptable rug in a brick and mortar store led nowhere. There were a lot of sales on President's Day, but nothing appealed to me. I did order one rug, only to immediately cancel it. This one was found a week later -- and it was even cheaper than those I saw on sale (it was on clearance).
I am really happy with this rug. While it's not an expensive piece, and we don't have a seriously "curated" home, it does fit in well with what we have -- just excuse the blankets we keep over the couch on a daily basis. After all, everything we own has to be dog-proof!

That's lovely, it fits in perfectly with your decor. It took me months of dedicated eBay searching to find our bedroom rug but I got there in the end! x
