Living Well

We live such a frugal life, that when we do splurge, I have to tell myself not to worry about the expense.  Luckily for me, TBG earns perks from work that provide a little luxury here and there.  This past year, he and his team met and exceed their sales goal.  As a reward, he gets to take everyone and a guest to a nice dinner.  His staff chose a small restaurant near our house.  It's a place I really like, but we rarely go to because it's a little pricey.

Amici's has been open for a long time, and turns out great food made on the premise.  Buffalo, NY is not the place to dine if you only like big conglomerate eateries.  There are very few restaurant chains within the city and our adjacent suburb.  There are, however, a lot of restaurants.  We live in a food town and one thing I miss in our single-salary life, is the regular/Friday dinner out ritual we used to have.  It's hard to feel too deprived, though, when we have an opportunity like this.

Our yearly Caribbean vacation is a splurge, but more affordable because TBG earns a lot of it through meeting sales incentives.  This year, we're going to St. Maarten.  Airfare, lodging, land transportation, gratuities and a week at an all inclusive resort will set us back around $1500.  I gulped when writing the check, but we'll be staying in a deluxe room that is the size of the entire second floor of our house, with a balcony and ocean view.  A get-a-way like this costs over four thousand dollars at regular price, so having this perk puts a luxury vacation within reach.  We've been to St. Maarten before and know we won't have to spend $$ on excursion (thanks to the dollar bus rides!).  It's great for us that this is an adult only facility and all our liquor is covered.

It's easy to feel deprived when you don't spend a lot of money in the regular course of life.  Whenever I start to feel like I'm living too basic of a life, I remember that we have perks that many folks don't get to enjoy.  We can afford some luxury if we do it right.  Besides, once I'm in the tropical island environment, it'll be easy to let all worries go.  Lucky me!!!

  1. Ooh lala! Your trip to St Maarten sounds fabulous! And I love freebie dinners out. Definitely take advantage of those perks, where else can you go for $1500 and have your meals and drinks covered and have such a nice room?

    1. Just got back from the trip. I am sad to report we were very disappointed with the quality. I'm going to have to post about it. It was, however, a very economical trip. The restaurant we went to locally, now that was sublime!

  2. I don't crave much luxury. But, it would be nice to have luxuries more cheaply.

    1. I think it is subjective too. You can make your surroundings comfortable the way you like it and that creates luxury that is just as enjoyable!

    1. Just got back from the trip so I need to recover and do a post or two. What we honestly like the most is traveling with this group. We have consistently enjoyed getting together with these people for four years now. The company you keep is just as important!

  4. I'm not into tablecloth dinners or luxury suites, but it sure is nice if you can get them at a great rate or even free. We chose to live near the gulf coast so that we could be by the water any time without having to take a plane to get there. The only problem is making or having the free time to get there. We have discovered that time (and free time especially) is the real luxury in life.

    1. You are absolutely right there! We weren't able to enjoy a true sunset over the sea because it was cloudy every day. I realized that the vista we see regularly at our camp is just as spectacular. You become immune to that when you see it often. Then there is the flip side, when you know it's out there and not beyond reach, but you're too busy to access it. I think your move to the coast was a smart move.
