Our kitchen island had gotten pretty beat up. Now I don't necessarily mind things that are artfully distressed, this was just plain beat up. I'd purchased paint for it a while back but was waiting for warm weather to actually do the job. This past week we had a warm spell and I was able to finally get it done.
The first part was taking out the drawers (not a fun task since one was a junk drawer), sanding and then painting them. There were also the two sliding doors to do as well. I did the right drawer and door first, then the left door, saving the left drawer for last (the dreaded junk drawer)!
I sanded everything and then spray painted it using Valspar matt black paint/primer, which I found at a discount center for $1.99 a can. I also picked up a jar of Martha Stewart's indoor/outdoor flat black craft paint. The MS paint was $1.49 on clearance at Michael's. This was a decent sized jar, not the 2oz tube.
The island was too bulky to bring outside so I set it on cardboard and
started with a spray coat and finished with the craft paint. I am so happy with how it turned out, although I learned a valuable lesson. Even with the cardboard down, the spray particles migrated beyond my cardboard covering. That meant I had to seriously clean the floor (and the bottom of my shoes!). Now I know not to spray indoors. I had done the drawers and doors in the garage, so that much wasn't a mistake. I had a palm sander, which I used on the back porch.
This job consumed the entire can of the Valspar, although I also used some on another project I'll post soon. I did not need much of the MS paint, so I'll have that for another project too. There is a discount chain in our area called Ollie's Bargain Outlet, and the spray paint was cheap so I bought two cans! If anyone is interested, it is the "Project Perfect" product. It really works well.
So... In essence, the project set me back about $2.10. Not bad -- and I think it looks great too!
